The Lady Lions have fought and battled all season long. And the first round of substate was no exception. Prior to last season it had been over 6 years since LHS had won a substate game. The Lady Lions broke that streak last season with a big victory at SM South.
This season Lawrence had a goal of putting themselves in a situation where they could host both rounds of substate at LHS. And LHS had not hosted a substate game in almost 8 years since 2008.
But through hard work and determination, the Lady Lions reeled off 4 straight wins and 6 of their last 8 to move past SM West and earn the 2nd seed in substate. It was a tremendous accomplishment for the Lady Lion Program.
First up for Lawrence High was the talented and pesky SM East Lady Lancers who LHS just had beaten a week prior on the LHS senior night, 48-42 in a hard fought close game.
This time around the Lady Lions would be without star E'lease Stafford who was injured in the 3rd quarter of the Free State game just a few days before.
It would be the hardest test of the season for LHS and they passed with flying colors!
Just like the last time these two teams played it was a very close, intense contest. With SME winning 16-15 after one quarter of play.
In the 2nd quarter, LHS were able to hit a few more shots and get a few more stops outscoring the Lancers 15-11 to go up 30-27 at the half.
The 3rd quarter was a close back and forth affair with neither team making much of a push to separate but fortunately the Lady Lions won the 3rd by one
point to push their lead to 41-37 heading into the final 8 minutes.
From there it was all Lawrence High as they outscored SME 19-11 in the 4th to go on to a 60-48 substate victory and propel themselves into the substate championship for the 2nd consecutive year for the first time since 2007-2009!
